Village of Caín

Cain is one of the reference towns of the Valdeón Valley and the Picos de Europa National Park. Located at an altitude of only 480 metres, the village of Cain is the starting point for numerous hiking routes, including the famous Cares Route. Its name means depending on its origin: sprout, emerge, goat pasture, fog or fountain.

The Village

Surrounded by high limestone summits, the ancient cainejos (people of the natives of Cain) had the reputation of being at the same time great shepherds and great climbers. From this town was precisely the one known as “El Cainejo”, Gregorio Pérez Demaría, who has gone down in history for the feat of conquering the Naranjo de Bulnes in 1904 as a rope companion of D. Pedro Pidal, Marqués de Villaviciosa.

The people keep a type of their constructions, stone, wood, tile… Although it still exists and can be visited, but without dwellers there is the village of Cain de Arriba, hidden among mountains. In the village you will find the small church of Santo Tomás and one of the best preserved mills and protagonist of many photographs for its location very close to the beginning of the Cares Route.
