Corona Hermitage, Valdeón Valley

The Corona Hermitage is located on the mountain that with the same name is located halfway between the towns of Cordiñanes and Cain. In this enclave there is the tradition that King Don Pelayo was crowned, and as every legend does not cease to have its background of reason.

HISTORY AND LEGEND

The hermitage of Corona

According to Sánchez Albornoz in his volume “Origins of the Spanish Nation” in the year 718, being Balí Al-Hurr, Pelayo, spatario del Rey Rodrigo e hijo del Duque Fáfila, fled from Cordoba and returned to the North where by not giving his consent to the wedding of the Berber Governor Munuza with his sister and pursued by him he had to take refuge in the abrupt Valleys of the Peaks of Europe where he encouraged his inhabitants to rebellion against the invader proclaimed leader in the councils of Ponga, Sajambre, Valdeón, Áliva and Onís

Against this uprising Alkama turned in the year 722 giving rise to the battle of Covadonga. The Picos de Europa and especially Valdeón, were again the last stronghold of a rebellion against the invaders founded on the freedom of their inhabitants and on their abrupt terrain of very difficult subjugation.

Another existing legend affirms that in the year 1580 the Valley of Valdeón suffered a “persistent” drought, and it was the people of this Valley who asked this Virgin of Corona for water that granted the arrival of the longed-for rain, Hence, every year on September 8th the feast of Our Lady of Corona is celebrated by taking her in procession on the last Sunday of August to one of the two Parish Churches of the Council.

If the year is even it will be welcomed by the Parish of Santa Eulalia in Posada and if the year is odd it will be housed in the parish of San Pedro in Soto.
