Cuesta Fría beech forest

Declared a World Heritage Site in 2017, the beech forest of Cuesta Fría is located on the southern slope of the Massif Occidental de los Picos de Europa, at the foot of the limestone peaks of the Moledizos.

It occupies a steep slope at the head of the Dobra River basin, in the natural divide with the Cares River basin.

Its extension, state of conservation and spectacular beech trees have made this remote forest of the Picos de Europa National Park be declared by Unesco as one of the most representative beech forests of the European continent, included in the candidacy of the Carpathian and other regions of Europe.

Their beeches witness what happened in the same territory but hundreds of thousands of years ago. Curiously, the most recognized tree in the beech forest of Cuesta Fría is an imposing oak, known as the Roblón de Cuesta Fría, whose perimeter reaches 7 meters.

The easiest way to access Cuesta fría is through the Vega de Vegabaño, from the town of Soto de Sajambre, located in the neighboring municipality of Sajambre.
