TRANSVALDEONICA IN DETAIL
Although the layout of the Transvaldeónica is circular and has its beginning and end in the town of Posada de Valdeón, on this page and for easy reading you will find its description divided into four sections.
Posada de Valdeón | Cordiñanes
The route of this sports event held every last Saturday of August in the Valdeón Valley, begins by leaving the town of Posada de Valdeón by the bridge that allows to cross the Cares River to the west, to continue in parallel with the course of the own Cares for the road known like the Bustio. The transit through this marked road will be brief, having to abandon it shortly by the path that towards the left ascends in the direction of the Majada de Pantivalles, facing with it the first slopes of the test.
After reaching the maximum level of this first ascent (1165m) the route now heads down the slope to link again with the Bustio road, to continue along it to the viewpoint of Tombo (840m), and from there head towards Cordiñanes.
Cordiñanes | Refuge de Collado Jermoso.
From Cordiñanes (850m) the Transvaldeónica shows with force its signs of identity as a hard, technical and demanding journey, entering a chaotic world where everything is limestone rock and vertical landscape. In this great scenario you must face the strongest climb of the whole route, about 1310m of positive slope until you win the Colladinas (2160m), highest point of the route.
The runner or mountaineer who is willing to demand in this challenge must continue from Cordiñanes along the narrow and fast path of La Rienda, that, above the village and to the east, runs through an unimaginable and aerial zig zag that leads to surpass on the left the enormous rocky wall that is situated on this town.
Won the Canto de la Rienda, the narrow path now heads in search of the huge and long channel of Asotín that, nestled between the summits of the Torre del Friero (2445m – dcha.) and the Torre de Peñalba (242424m – izda.), descends towards the Cares from the sector of the Torre del Llambrión (2642m) in the Urrieles massif. The first beeches of the Asotín forest (declared a World Heritage Site in 2017) are the indication of having reached the bed of this channel.
After crossing the beautiful and fresh hayedo a little higher waits the Vega de Asotín (1450m), the last rest for the legs that will have to employ from this point all their effort to overcome the strong difference that, skirting for the left the Canal Honda, leads first to the Collado Solano (1568m) and then to the Traviesas de Congosto, where the hands will also be of great help to reach the refuge of Collado Jermoso (2046m), place in which is located the first solid and liquid supply of the test.
Collado Jermoso Refuge | Cabén de Remoña.
Replenished the forces in the victualling of Collado Jermoso it is time to continue ascending in the direction of the Colladinas (2160m), where at last the route of the Transvaldeónica begins to descend, although it still remains to overcome a succession of «ups and downs» chaotic terrain and limestone to win the Collado de la Padierna (1976m). It will still take a little more effort to finish the ascent to the Alto de la Canal (2030m), place with incredible views of the Vega de Liordes, the most extensive plain of the Picos de Europa.
At the Alto de la Canal begins the descent through the Pedabejo Channel that leaves behind the rock world of the central massif of Picos de Europa, to now head towards the seemingly friendlier and greener slopes of the Valdeón Valley. With the first areas of pasture is reached the Cabén de Remoña (1775m), place in which is a new refueling test to recover liquids.
Cabén de Remoña | Posada de Valdeón.
From the Cabén de Remoña the route continues in pronounced descent by a winding path that, crossing brooms, beech and meadows, leads to the town of Santa Marina de Valdeón (1156m), where once again a liquid and solid supply allows to recover some strength to face the last stretch of the route.
A slope of 200m of unevenness that is made by track and inside a beech grove, separates the town of Santa Marina from the Jor majada (1320m), place in which those who make the Transvaldeónica begin the final descent that by the valley of Prada and passing by the viewpoint of the Cross, will take you to Posada de Valdeón, the final point of this demanding and tough Trail.
TRANSVALDEÓNICA AS AN ACTIVITY
Like mountain activity and trail training.
Although the event as such is only held on the last Saturday of each month of August, the itinerary of the Transvaldeónica is also possible to do it in a recreational way throughout the summer season.
If you are considering this activity outside the designated sporting event, either as a mountain trail or as part of your trail runner training, take into account that both the route marking and the refreshments described in the details of the test are only available during the sporting celebration of the race, so it will be necessary for your safety to be equipped with a map, compass or gps and provided with enough water and food.
Both in Collado Jermoso and in Santa Marina de Valdeón, you will nevertheless find infrastructures in service throughout the year, in which you can support yourself to complement those refueling needs.
Be prudent and value your skills and preparation correctly.
Remember that this route, besides being very demanding, runs through a technical and complicated high mountain terrain.
