Valdeón Valley Picos de Europa
The Valdeón Valley, or municipality of Posada de Valdeón, is located in the northeast of the province of León, in the heart of the Cantabrian Mountain Range and within the territory of the Picos de Europa National Park.
LOCATION AND ACCESSES OF THE MUNICIPALITY
The municipality of Valdeón is a steep mountain valley shaped by the action of the waters of the river Cares. It is precisely this well-known river that articulates the municipality, crossing it from south to north towards the famous Cares Gorge and ordering along its bank, to most of the Villages of Valdeón.
Physically the Valdeón Valley is a circus-like depression that is surrounded by high summits, both of the Cantabrian Mountain Range and of the Massifs Occidental (or of the Cornion) and Central (or of the Urriels) of the National Park of the Peaks of Europe.
This orographic distribution makes it necessary to access the municipality of Valdeón by road through one of the two mountain ports that connect the municipality.
